MIT researchers have created a swarm of tiny helicopters that behave like fireflies. Each helicopter contains a set of small LEDs and acts as "a smart pixel" that can be moved around in mid-air by remote control. A group of these mechanical fireflies can therefore become a "canvas" that can transform itself from one 3D shape to another or morph into a two-dimensional photographic image.
