Microsoft IE8 contest insults the competition 18 Jun 2009
As you may know, Microsoft has buried $10K somewhere on the internet as an incentive to get users to adopt Internet Explorer 8 (You can only find the prize if you use IE8). Ho-hum. But wait, what's interesting about this is that the competition's dedicated website gives users of other browsers a jolly good ticking off.
The image above shows the site as it appears in Google's Chrome browser and, as you'll notice, the second paragraph in the main body of the page reads: "But you'll never find [the prize] using tarnished Chrome. (So get rid of it, or get lost)". (Note: A larger version of the image is available here.)
Nice, eh?!
John Resig has a collection of the insults seen in other competitor browsers over at Flickr (including boring Safari and old Firefox).
We're sure that the legions of MS haters will get all worked up about this, but we like it. It shows a bit of personality and it's more cheeky than aggressive. That said, people who live in glass houses really shouldn't be throwing stones - as these images of the site in IE8 (compatibility mode) and IE5.5 show! And telling users of other browsers to "get lost" probably isn't the best adoption strategy!

If you're using Firefox and the User-Agent Switcher, you can make a new string:
Description: Internet Explorer 8 (Windows Vista)
User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1)
App Name: Microsoft Internet Explorer
App Version: 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1)
Platform: Win32
And leave Vendor and Vendor Sub blank.
That'll show you as using IE8 in Windows Vista.
