Better Bikeways 16 Jun 2009

If you're a keen cyclist you'll be well aware of the lack of dedicated bike lanes in most major cities. You'll also probably appreciate why this is the case - since they take a long time (and a lot of money) to plan and build, which means that they aren't exactly at the top of most local authorities' to-do lists.
In recognition of these problems, Los Angeles-based designer Joseph Prichard thinks it's time we started exploring different, more cost-effective solutions for getting cyclists back on our roads. His proposal, Better Bikeways, therefore calls for nothing more than the addition of bike-specific signage to our existing streets. In addition to being cheaper than marking out bike lanes, re-paving sidewalks and re-routing traffic, this proposal has the added benefit of raising drivers' awareness of cycling as an alternative transporation option - so it's potentially a green solution too!
We're not sure that we like the aesthetic of the signs that Joseph is proposing, but we're big fans of his unconventional take on resolving the problem...
