Lenovo laptops to get disable by text message feature 26 Nov 2008
Lenovo is to add a new feature to its ThinkPad range that will allow users to disable their notebook by SMS. The premise of "Lenovo Constant Secure Remote Disable" is simple: In the event that your laptop is lost or stolen, you send a text message from your phone to your laptop. Upon receiving the text, your ThinkPad will immediately shut itself down or, if switched off, will disable itself the next time it's turned on. In the event that your notebook is recovered, you can then unlock it again by entering your personal "resurrection code".
While some will no doubt dismiss this idea as flawed (in that a WAN card must be installed and your laptop must be in range of a GSM tower for the shutdown signal to be received), we think it will prove effective in the vast majority of "laptop loss" situations.
