Carcade: An augmented in-car videogame! 19 Nov 2008

Carcade is the ultimate driving game for...erm...passengers. Confused? Allow me to elaborate: the game uses the landscape that's whizzing past your (real-life) car windows to create an augmented reality video game for your passengers!

The game runs on a laptop, using a webcam and special tracking software to recognise objects such as buildings and trees. These elements of the physical enviroment are then incorporated into the game's virtual environment as obstacles that the player must avoid. In the prototype, the player is in control of a spaceship that she must manoeuvre around these objects while collecting points and shooting enemy craft. Rather coolly...the speed of your car affects the difficulty of the game since buildings and other scenery pass by faster when driving fast!

I used to play that game when I was little by sticking a plasticine spaceship to the window and moving my head around to 'control' it! Low tech FTW.
