The end of the iPod? 8 Oct 2008
In an exclusive interview in yesterday's Telegraph, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak predicted the imminent demise of the iPod. Here's the key quote:
"The iPod has sort of lived a long life at number one. Things like, that if you look back to transistor radios and Walkmans, they kind of die out after a while. It's kind of like everyone has got one or two or three. You get to a point when they are on display everywhere, they get real cheap and they are not selling as much."
Makes a lot of sense. However, we believe that the addition of a few new features could extend the iPod's lifespan by at least a couple more years. The addition of wireless syncing would be a major boon, for example - no more connecting directly to your PC to keep in step with the contents of your iTunes library. (Unfortunately, this technology is too slow to be practical at present, but it should be fast enough in a year or two's time). Removing more (all?) of the DRM red tape from iTunes would also help resuscitate the product line. As would improving the iPod's video playing capabilities (DivX support is on a lot of iPod owners' wish lists) and, perhaps, borrowing some of the peer-to-peer music-sharing ideas that Zune has been playing around with.
The iPod will eventually be swallowed up by the iPhone, of course. The iPhone already has all of the functionality of a top-of-the-line iPod and has added a glut of new features of its own (notably, a phone...but also GPS, internet, email, third-party applications and so on). It's now just a case of waiting for it to become cheaper and for Apple to allow its customers to choose from a host of carriers (instead of being forced to choose from a range of one). At this point, the iPhone will go mainstream and the iPod will finally ascend to technology heaven.
