Update: Eight people bought I Am Rich! 8 Aug 2008
That's right! The Los Angeles Times reports that eight "lucky" customers managed to purchase a copy of Armin Heinrich's "I am rich" iPhone application, before it was unceremoniously pulled from Apple's App Store. As you may remember, the app retailed at $999.99 and does nothing more than display a red gem on your iPhone's desktop, thus serving no function other than to convey your wealth to others by virtue of your owning it.
Six mugs people from the United States, one from Germany and one from France dropped a cool grand for the gem - making $5,600 for Heinrich and $2,400 for Apple (which collects 30% of each sale for "store upkeep") in the process.
It's unclear as to how many of these purchases were deliberate, as opposed to accidents caused by the poor user interface of the App Store, however.
