The Visual Assistance Card 28 Aug 2008
One of the undesirable side effects of "world-gone-touchscreen" is that things are getting less and less accessible for blind people. Take the pay points at your local store, for example. Since many stores are now using touchscreens to take credit/debit card payment, blind people - who can't see or feel their way around these devices - are forced to trust clerks with their card - and, in some cases, must even let clerks enter their PIN on their behalf! Pretty scary, huh? Not only are these pay points inaccessible, they are also insecure!
In an attempt to address this problem, Kyle Lechtenberg - an Industrial Design graduate from Auburn University - has created the Visual Assistance Card. This card lays on top of a pay point's screen and, as a result of the Braille imprinted on the card, allows its blind user to "feel the pay point's user interface" and thus punch in his or her personal information (while keeping it private at the same time). Sounds good, eh?
However, while noble in intent, the Visual Assistance Card sounds a little impractical to us. Sure, it is lightweight and therefore easy to store and transport; however, it looks like it is only compatible with Target pay points - which suggests that you'd need a different card for each store you wanted to visit. Furthermore, it would only work with pressure-sensitive touchscreens (since the card forms a barrier that would render it incompatible with those that respond to skin contact - like the iPhone's capacitive touchscreen) and would also fail to work where a pay point's user interface extends over a number of pages/screens (since the layout on the card is configured only for a PIN entry screen). All of which, place a lot of restrictions on the card's use (Perhaps Target might consider keeping one at each till however).
Sounds like the long term answer to this accessibility problem is tactile feedback or - dare we say it - a return to the "mechanical" pay points of old (?)
