Real Snail Mail 12 Aug 2008

Created by Boredom Research for the SIGGRAPH 2008 Slow Art Exhibition, the Real Snail Mail project uses live snails to deliver your email.

How does it work? Well, when you send an email to the team via their website, it is delivered to one of eight "snail agents" - each of which has an RFID chip attached to its shell to store your message on. The snail then wanders around its tank and, when it eventually slithers within range of a drop off point, the data is transmitted wirelessly from the snail's RFID chip to a nearby computer - at which point it is delivered to your intended recipient!

At the time of writing "Agent 007" is the speediest deliverer, with an "average transfer time" of 1.88 days...which, while slow, is still faster than the UK Royal Mail!

Oh please, "Agent 007" is so impersonal - call him "Sean" :-D

Reminds me of the SNAil-based transfer Protocol, which actually achieves very high bandwidth by having a giant African snail pull a cart that has two DVDs for wheels. (See also IP Over Avian Carriers).
