Fez: A 2D 2 3D user interface 19 Aug 2008
Fez looks like your average 2D platform game...but fast forward the video clip above to around 00:30 and you'll see that it puts a whole new spin on this rather tired genre. That's right, at various points in the game, the user can switch from 2D to 3D!
Pretty neat, eh! Perhaps this technique is something that Microsoft and Apple should be exploring in the next versions of their operating systems (if they aren't already). Everyone knows that working in 2D is best for the vast majority of tasks; however, in certain circumstances, it would be really nice to be able to switch from 2D to 3D and back. For example, imagine being able to look around the side of your 2D browser window to see what applications are running on your desktop behind it!

Mark(s): Had forgotten about Super Paper Mario! Us user interface designers can learn a lot from the techniques used in these types of games. Indeed it seems like the gaming industry is driving most of the innovation that's occuring in the field of user interface design right now - as is plainly evident from things like Johnny Chung Lee's repurposing of the Wii controller and Adaptive Path's use of the Novint Falcon.
