The Hang On Outlet 28 Jul 2008

When devices are left plugged in, they continue to suck down power regardless of whether they are being used or not - which is bad for the environment of course. To combat this problem, designer Paulo Oh has come up with a simple solution: The "Hang On Outlet" encourages people to disconnect from the grid by providing them with a lip that holds on to their loose plugs. This means that you dont have to crawl around on the floor looking for the right one when the time comes to plug back in.
While this is certainly a nice design for keeping track of your plugs, we doubt that it will promote major energy savings. It just doesn't seem to offer enough motivation. But what do you think?

If a switch is connected to the wall outlet, doesn't that completely cut off power to the device? If so, that seems like the easier route. (People are lazy. Unplugging things is a hassle)

How about incorporating a plug-in scent dispenser. Providing an incentive to put the plug in the 'hang on' position might get people to use it more.
