Is Cuil an unCuil name? 30 Jul 2008

The Product Naming Blog thinks "Cuil" is an unCuil name. Sure, it's clever - "cuil" is gaelic for "knowledge" - but won't most people mistakenly pronounce it "quill"? And even if they pronounce it correctly, won't they assume it's spelt "cool" instead (which is a bit of a problem when you are relying on people to type your name correctly in their browser's address bar)? Finally, it's almost too easy for sarcastic types (like us) to brand it "uncuil", isn't it?!

I spent a couple of months working in the US with a bunch of other "Paddys" and it was hilarious listening to how common Irish names are pronounced there.
Niamh, Padraic, Sinéad etc.

As for "Cuil", I think the jury's out and I'll give them a while, but a very good point on phonetics and spelling.
