A better way to say "www"? 23 Jul 2008

New Scientist is asking its readers to help us English-speakers find a better way to pronounce "www".

Here in good old blighty we say "double-u-double-u-double-u"; while over in the US of States it's (the marginally faster) "dubya-dubya-dubya" - neither of which trip poetically off the tongue.

Interestingly, "www" is the longest possible three-letter string to pronounce in English. A fact that caused Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams to describe the World Wide Web as "the only thing I know of whose shortened form takes three times longer to say than what it's short for."

...So if you have any suggestions for solving this problem, let's hear 'em...

I spent a few months working with a bloke from NZ. He used to say "dub dub dub", it stuck with me and its all I say now.

This is a simple one. Stop using www. on domain names.

http://no-www.org/

I'm serious, there is really no reason to use it.

An old prof of mine always just said world-wide-web. Sounds a bit odd, but makes sense and it's pretty short.

How about "tri-dub"?

I wish we could get rid of the "http://" bit too

And while we're at it let's get rid of top level domain names too (.com, .org, .co.uk etc.) they just confuse people.
