Tipping point 16 Jun 2008

Dan Cederholm's local coffee shop has an interesting way of generating extra tips. The owners have placed two tips baskets by the cash register (instead of the de facto single basket), with a sign above that asks a different question each day. (On the day of Dan's last visit, the sign read "Should Obama pick Hillary as Vice President?") Customers can express their opinion by throwing their tip in either the "Yes" or the "No" basket.

What a great way to encourage participation. Having conducted hundreds of usability tests, we can tell you that people love giving their opinions on things - this tipping basket setup gives people a means of fulflling this urge while contributing a little something to the finanical welfare of their barista at the same time. Nice work Jaho Coffee!

Clever idea - I would guess that the more emotive (divisive) the question, the more tips you'd get. For example, I can imagine a lot of people would be moved to "answer" a question like "If it were possible, would you re-elect George W. Bush?"

As a commentor on Cederholm's site points out, this is a lot like something Innocent Drinks did when they were starting out:

The founders of Innocent spent a weekend selling smoothies at a festival and had two bins - one marked "yes" and the other "no". Above sat a sign bearing the question “Do you think we should give up our jobs to make these smoothies?” Customers voted by chucking their empty bottles into the relevant bin - thereby providing the Innocent team with some interesting poll data while, at the same time, encouraging people to dispose of their litter in a resposible manner.

Maybe tramps / beggars would be successful with this idea?

@DTM: LOL I bet that would work!
