Use - Collection - Proof - Artifact 7 May 2008

Jan Chipchase has an interesting post on souvenirs. Apparently, a number of the mountain huts on the routes up Mount Fuji offer a walking stick stamping service. It works like so: Tourists buy a stick at the bottom of the mountain and have it branded/stamped at each station with information about the route and the altitude at the current point. As Jan says "The stick fulfills a number of functions - a mixture of practicality, a gradual sense of achievement as each stamp is added, proof of attaining the summit, and ends up as an artifact." Interesting stuff.
