Microsoft TouchWall 15 May 2008
Following hot on the heels of Microsoft Surface, comes Microsoft TouchWall - a giant multi-touch-sensitive screen. While it may seem like just a vertically-orientated version of Surface, it's actually quite different from a functional perspective. Whereas Surface uses a camera to track your fingers, TouchWall uses infrared lasers combined with an infrared camera - which means that while TouchWall can't identify and interact with objects like Surface can, the TouchWall hardware can be used to "turn almost anything into a multi-touch interface" (including a sheet of cardboard!) and costs much less to purchase.

Looks like someone saw Johnny Lee's TED talk about doing it for $40 with a Wiimote... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H1zrLZwPjQ
The touch-sensitivity and multiple-scaled data do add an extra level of "oooh" though....
