The sorry state of in-store product demos 16 Apr 2008

User experience designer Brian Haggerty has written an excellent post on the sorry state of in-store product demos.
The photo above shows Microsoft's Zune on display at a US retail store and tells you everything you need to know. The overzealous security measures make it almost impossible to try-out and it looks, well, fugly. What a great first experience for potential customers!
(Man, I'd hate to be a mobile device designer. You can create the most beautiful product in the world, wrap it in the most exquisite packaging and then some poxy retail outlet goes and does something like this to it! All your great work is undone in a flash. D'oh!)

The demo phones you get in places like Carphone Warehouse are the worst. They've usually had their contents scooped out - so they feel unnaturally light in your hand - and, as they don't function without their guts, must make do with a ridiculous sticker for a screen!
