Intelligent paint turns roads pink in icy conditions 8 Apr 2008

New Scientist reports on a new temperature-sensitive varnish that can be applied to road surfaces to warn drivers about dangerous conditions. Developed by researchers at French company Eurovia, the varnish is made of a polymer containing a thermochromic pigment - the same stuff that's already used to make bath thermometers and frozen food packaging. This coating remains clear in good conditions but turns dark pink when temperatures drop below 1 degree C, thereby alerting drivers to the presence (or imminent presence) of ice. Interesting idea!

Interesting idea indeed, but is pink really the best choice of colour? Surely its nigh on invisible at night and with a coating of ice on top of it?
