Happy 50th Birthday DARPA! 8 Apr 2008
DARPA - the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency - is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Thursday. So what? Well, DARPA practically created the internet - constructing the worlds first "interconnected network" of computers back in 1969. The agency also funded the development of Douglas Engelbart's NLS computer system (the platform that introduced a number of revolutionary computing concepts including the bit-mapped screen, groupware, hypertext, the graphical user interface and the mouse!) and the Aspen Movie Map (the world's first hypermedia system and an important precursor of virtual reality). Not bad for a team that has at no time numbered more than 240 employees!
