Britannia rules no more! 7 Apr 2008

Last week, The Royal Mint unveiled the biggest changes to Britain's coinage in 40 years. Unsurprisingly, the new designs have been met with a chorus of widespread disapproval. The Welsh are upset by the omission of the Welsh dragon (which is interesting given that the designer of the coins is a Welshman!); while others are sad to see the back of Britannia (the Goddess devised more than 2,000 years ago by the Roman Empire, who has appeared on UK coinage since 1672). These are both legitimate criticisms of course, however we have to applaud the Mint's willingness to take a risk with these designs. It must have been very tempting to go with a variation on the current theme so as not to rock the political boat.

...Anyway...what do you think? Great design or something that should be filed alongside our Olympic logo?

The omission of the Welsh dragon is even more perplexing when you consider that the coins are minted in Wales too!

Will have to wait until these are in circulation to know for sure - though as a Johnny Foreigner I worry that these new coins could result in a steep (and costly!) learning curve for me! Do you think the Royal Mint user tested the new designs with shoppers? ;-)

Interesting that they've met with disapproval. All of the Americans I've seen talking about them are jealous of the creativity (and still pissed that the blind still can't use our money).
