LucidTouch: The end of fat finger syndrome 13 Mar 2008
We first wrote about Microsoft's LucidTouch back in October, but it's taken until now for the concept to really capture the blogosphere's imagination. Everyone seems to be blogging about it this week in fact.
Most people are writing about the novelty of the "touch the back of the screen, not the front" mode of operation. But this input mechanism isn't just a gimmick, it serves a very useful purpose: It eliminates fat-fingering. Why? Because you can see what's under you fingertips (something you can't do on "normal" touch-screen devices like the iPhone as your hands get in the way). And if that isn't enough, a small red dot appears beneath each finger to show exactly where it is registering on the screen. This means that you can use the device just as accurately as if you were using a stylus!

One of the things I like about the iPhone's touchscreen is the pinch (or squeeze) to zoom feature. I've only mastered this technique using my thumb and forefinger though. How would you achieve this feat on the LucidTouch screen when your thumb has to hug the front of the display to prevent you from dropping it? (Don't tell me I'm going to have to practice the Vulcan salute!)

The design isn't quite as slick as it seems apparently, cos in real-life, there's a big old camera hanging off the back that's used to detect your finger positions. I hear that MS plans to remove this before the product launches tho, replacing it with infrared sensors instead.
