Braille beer can labels 3 Mar 2008

Given that they are the same size, shape and weight, beer cans and soda cans are pretty much impossible for blind people to tell apart. This means that they often end up cracking opening a Kirin, when they actually wanted to sup on a Coke and vice versa. We were therefore encouraged to learn that Japanese beer cans now come with embossed Braille labels as a standard feature.

A nice touch and one that reflects the fact that the Japanese are far more respectful and accomodating of the elderly and disabled than we are here in the West.

My two favourite topics, booze and accessibility (in no particular order).

I spotted this back in January, braille on a wine label:

Seen it on a few Spanish wine labels too... each dot had a little overgloss for extra tactile constrast against the uncoated stock.
