Tagged in Motion: 3D virtual graffiti 8 Feb 2008

A real-world space with 3D graffiti - i.e. a series of coloured blocks, in this case - floating in space.

Walls, trains, shop fronts and the occasional tramp. Graffiti needs to be sprayed on solid surfaces, doesn't it?

...Not anymore. Celebrated graffiti artist and co-creater of Nextwall, DAIM, is attempting to bridge the gap between real-world graffiti art and virtual space with a new project called "Tagged in Motion". Equipped with a "virtual spraycan", DAIM sprays graffiti into empty space while three cameras using Motion Capturing technology record his position and movements. The assimilated data is shown to him in real-time - as free-floating 3D graffiti - via a pair of video glasses. This allows him to decide how and where to apply his strokes and, thanks to a Bluetooth controller, the colours, strength and intensity of the brushstrokes and textures he is using. Sweet!
