HD DVD is dead. Long live Blu-ray 12 Feb 2008

Surely this spells the end for HD DVD...Netflix has just announced that it will stop carrying HD DVDs by the end of 2008 in favour of Blu-ray discs:

"Since the first high-definition DVDs came on the market in early 2006, Netflix has stocked both formats. But the company said that in recent months the industry has stated its clear preference for Blu-ray and that it now makes sense for the company to initiate the transition to a single format."

Best Buy has also jumped on the bandwagon and is henceforth going to be recommending Blu-ray to its customers.

...So there you have it: The criminal underworld had it right all along (having predicted HD DVD's demise nearly seven months ago)!

HD DVD...Blu-ray...Who cares? Both formats will be rendered obsolete by movie downloads in the very near future anyway.

I hear ya Zidge, but movie downloads (in the "download and store your whole library of films on your PC" sense) won't be practical for a fair while yet. Disk space and cripplingly slow broadband access (thanks ISPs!) is still a major issue and one that will ensure that discs will still be cluttering up our living rooms for a long time to come imho.
