Finnish toilets: SMS2P 6 Feb 2008

Engadget reports that people driving through Western Finland will soon need to carry a mobile phone if they want to be able to take advantage of the area's roadside public conveniences. In an attempt to curb vandalism, the Finnish Road Administration has implemented a system along Highway 1 that requires toilet visitors to text "Open" (in Finnish, of course) to a central office in order to be let in. The idea is that people will be less likely to smash up the place (or worse!) if they know that their mobile number has been recorded in a database somewhere (traceability = accountability). Sounds like a good idea to us (and probably anyone else who has ever used a public toilet!).
