Semacode-based Starbucks-ordering from your iPhone 11 Jan 2008

Two views of an iPhone-based Starbucks ordering application for the iPhone. The first shows a simple menu/list of drinks; the second shows images of the drinks.

Multimedia designer, Phil Lu, created these beautiful mockups of an iPhone application that he calls "QuickOrder".

It works like so: You create your order on your iPhone and when you're done, the app produces a semacode. You then bypass the queue at the counter and swipe the semacode over a sensor. This sends your order to the store's baristas and processes your payment. Et voila. A few minutes later you're served with a piping hot cup of Joe.

Surprisingly, Lu came up with this concept before Apple publicised a patent application describing similar means of to-go ordering from the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Two more views of the application. The first shows illustrated size, milk and cream options; the second shows the ability to type a note - e.g. to request infusions.

Lovely comps - Starbucks should hire this guy to do all their design for them. Not sure about the usefulness of the application though - I could see it causing a lot of confusion at the serving point. "Who's cap is this?" "Did you order at the counter or via the swipe thingy?" etc.
