Why the iPhone didn't ship with GPS 17 Dec 2007

If you were wondering why the iPhone didn't ship with GPS technology, then wonder no more. As the image above shows, GPS modules are far too fat and bulky to fit within the iPhone's slender casing.
The GPS module pictured above is a prototype created by the engineers at partfoundry and is thought to be as small as a GPS module could reasonably be made at the current time - given the state of the current manufacturing techology and the need to achieve a marketable price point (which is estimated to fall somewhere around the $100 mark).
Issues of bulk aside, the video clip below show that it works quite nicely (Okay, okay, GPS aficionados will be quick to point out that it's no Garmin unit, but its slick integration with Google Maps is excellent nonetheless):
