Keitai Shousetsu: Stories on your cell phone 3 Dec 2007
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, half of Japan's top-ten best-selling fiction books were composed on the tiny handset of a mobile phone. These works sold an average of 400,000 copies prompting president of Goma Books, Masayoshi Yoshino, "to establish this not simply as a fad, but as a new kind of culture".
The books depict tales of teen romance, sex, drugs and other adolescent interests as a series of clipped one-liners, emoticons and spaces (used to show what a character is thinking), all of which can be read easily on a mobile phone. (Scene and character development are notably missing). Mobile phone novels - or "keitai shousetsu" as they are known in Japan - may soon reach the bestseller lists outside Japan and provide inspiration for new channels of expression in the West.

Imagine how the secret services could benefit from this: clip together all the text message they've intercepted during the years and publish! Bang! Instant succes. Tales of romance, everyday routine, maybe a bit of violence, drugs, murders, some spying stuff maybe and then a compilation of our pictures and clips taken with mobile camera. Buy the book and get the dvd free! Ok, maybe I let my imagination slide a bit, still they'd make a fortune.
