Why does Guinness taste better in Ireland? 23 Nov 2007

John Udell enlightens us following a visit to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. The first reason is "freshness": Since Guinness is so much more popular in Ireland than anywhere else in the world, kegs are drained - and therefore replaced - very quickly, which means that an Irish pint is far more likely to be fresh. The second reason - "cleanliness" - is even better. Says John:

"If you're a pub owner in Ireland, you are affiliated with Guinness. One of the terms of that relationship is that every three weeks you'll receive a visit from a Guinness representative who will flush the lines to your Guinness taps. Pub owners are supposed to do that on their own, but some are lazy about it and Guinness doesn't want to take any chances. If the lines aren't flushed, the brew will be compromised."

Hows about that for "a focus on user experience"?

This may be true, and I'm not disagreeing. I've just been over to Ireland for my first time, and always being a Guinnes and Black drinker in the U.K. was slightly apprehensive about having it "neat" but it lacks the bitterness of the English variety. After speaking to several Irish guys, there were a couple of opinions as to why it tastes better in Ireland.
1) It doesn't travel well - Which bodes well as I'm now in North Wales drinking Guinness and it tastes better than the Guinness in Manchester and...
2) There are different grades of Guinness, 1) The best for local pubs around the brewery (Again back to the "Doesn't travel well idea) to 5) Which is the far flung export stuff!
Don't know where the truth lies, it may just be that at around 5 euros a pint in Dublin you make it taste better, but after 17 pints I'm sure it did taste better.

One thing is for sure though, that you'll never meet a nicer bunch of people than the Irish and if you seek out a local bar like we did in Saggart, get involved in a sing song, a bit of craig, then the night is cool! btw I know you'll never see this but thanks Andy (Ya C**t) and the other guys for the entertainment and the songs................
