The WWF's ingenious paper towel dispenser 18 Oct 2007

Another great WWF campaign (remember the billboard that cast a shadow to illustrate rising sea levels?). As you can see from the images above, this time around they've taken a standard paper towel dispenser and cut a hole in it that's the shape of South America. Over the hole, they've placed green transparent plastic to give the towels stored in the dispenser a distinctly green tint. These modifications should make bathroom visitors stop and think before they reach for a humongous stack of towels - as the contraption clearly conveys that with every piece of paper you take, you're taking away from the greenness of South America.

Couldn't they just stop using paper towels? This campaign is a fail.

so you should use hand driers which use electricity generated from burning fossil fuels. the whole anti-paper towels campaign is flawed. majorly.

It's quite a good idea to reduce the impact of using paper towels in the toilets. Half of the unhabitants of this wonderful world don't really need to use paper...because they simply wash with water, clean and dry with tissue towel. Remember, no paper in the toilets is possible, half of the planet is still doing it, why not the others ?

what about caring a towel with you. Like a bandana i use a japanese version of that. It works great and has many other uses as well

well, making paper towels also takes energy, so it's not strictly energy vs resources, you know. Yes, probably less energy as a whole.
Nevertheless, most electricity currently generated in the US comes from coal and other sources not oil. Still a fossil fuel, but not oil, so less of a political issue.
In addition, you can generate energy from other sources (geo, solar, wind). It's not necessarily the case that hand dryers are powered by fossil fuels.
Lastly, the article focused on patrons using *LESS* paper towels, and not switching to electric hand dryers.
As for a failed campaign, again, the idea is to think before you take and hopefully use *less*.

We can just ignore the fact that we have massive farms of trees grown for the express purpose of making paper and wood.
It's a good thing recycling isn't a crock, right!

I just wipe my hands on my pants. No need for paper towel or electric dryers. I mean really.

I LOVE THIS.
That is sooooo cool.

I think it's a great idea. Regardless of whether or not people will use less paper towels or burn too many fossil fuels b/c they use the hand driers, people will stop and think.

HELLO ~ The trees in South America are not being cut down and processed into paper. Recycling or using less paper in North America will not change the fate of the rain forests, as those trees are being cut down, burned where they fall and the new fields planted with coffee, cocoa, and banana crops. Want to save the rain forests? Quit buying coffee, chocolate, and bananas grown on slash-and-burn acreage.
WAKE UP !

Wait..fight using paper by using paper?
I don't understand.

Everyone's got a reason not to change their behaviour. This planet is toast.

No a bad idea. True, stop using paper towel won't save the Amazonas, but for the more general idea of being a bit more conscious of the way we use energy, is in my opinion valid.
Personally I agree with Julie, the best is to wipe your clean hands in your pants. Better to be a bit less hygienic and save some trees.
Really, you can't have both.

lol? the picture themselves show the paper is green and the hole is clear
failure

@loufail: Both the paper and the plastic cover are green ;)

This is a brilliant idea. It would surely work on me. I usually tend to consume as less paper towels as I can even if I'm at a bar or in a restaurant. Many people never think of this. They usually consider it's their right to use as many as they want. The bar or restaurant has nothing to say against this but it's a manner of politeness. We should always think about the source of the paper not only the place it will end.

People are going to use paper towels, you can't stop everyone from using them. But something like this just gets people to stop and think for a second about what they are doing and even if this infulences just one person thats a start.
I think its a great idea, we could all just sit around and watch our planet be destroyed at least this is productive and its not worsening the situation like printing flyers and posters on deforestation!
