The t-phone: A mobile device for the elderly 22 Oct 2007

Jeong-Kyun Nam's "t-phone" is aimed at the elderly and, indeed, anyone else who has trouble seeing, remembering and dialling telephone numbers. The idea is simple: The phone comes with a bunch of RFID tags that are stored in a built-in compartment. Each tag is pre-programmed with the number of a person who is important to the owner (e.g. her doctor, next of kin, careworker, etc.) and displays a picture of that person as an aide-memoire. When the owner wants to make a call, all she has to do is take out the relevant tag and drop it onto the t-phone's over-sized call button. She then presses the button, et voila - the phone reads the RFID information stored in the tag and dials the relevant number.
It's certainly a novel concept, but we're not sure that it's practical. We suspect that many elderly users would struggle to fit the tags into the call button slot (especially if they have a debilitating illness like arthritis) and that the tags would frequently be dropped and lost as a result.

Yeah, why not just click the tags into the number buttons, kind of like a speed-dial? I realize this limits the number in the memory to just twelve names, but as you've said, the way it works now seems less practical.
