LucidTouch: A transparent touch-screen device 12 Oct 2007

The iPhone's multi-touch user interface represents a great leap forwards in the way that we interact with devices, but it isn't perfect. As we've mentioned before, it's prone to fat-fingering and the process of pointing and selecting obstructs your view of the screen. Wigdor at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs and Patrick Baudisch at Microsoft Research are hoping to address these flaws with a new touch-sensitive gadget called LucidTouch that allows users to navigate by touching the back of the device instead of the front. According to its inventors, this allows for a firmer grip on the device, better performance, and a clear view of the screen at all times.
