Show the plug, not the cable 21 Sep 2007
37signals asks "Why do so many companies selling cables show you this bird's eye view?..."

"......when what you really want is this view of the ends."

It's a great example of companies misunderstanding their customers' needs. A cable is a cable is a cable. Period. What customers really want to know is "Will the ends of the cable fit into the sockets of the two things I want to connect?"

Yeah, there's no need to show us a length of cable, since the words “2m cable” do the job a whole lot better.

Not only that, why do so many companies show the wrong image for their product? Look at the examples you gave above. Does RR-ASBL01-36 really look half again as long as RR-ASBL01-24? I don't think so. I'm pretty sure its the same image for both. That really reduces my confidence in buying anything from such a merchant.

I thought they showed cables to give you an idea of their length. But in most cases they are shown coiled and, as no other objects apear alongside them for comparison, there's nothing to help users to obtain this information. I guess you're right then: they are pointless. Go with Keith's suggestion!
