The Subway (Sun)Light Project 23 Aug 2007

A subway wall. The artwork affixed to it is illuminated by sunlight.

Parsons student Caroline Pham won first place in the school's 2007 Sustainable Design Review for her "Subway Light Project". Her design uses a "sunlight transport system" to capture actual natural light from above the ground and channel it into the dark recesses of the subway via a fibre optic network. The light is then cast onto the walls of subway corridors to illuminate public urban artworks like the one pictured above.

Not only does this system save energy (and the associated cost of lighting these areas, as payable by the city / taxpayer), it also makes the subway a safer, more pleasurable experience for commuters!
