You decide: Turn on the lights or hang up your jacket 9 Aug 2007

"Off" is the latest piece from electrical-engineer-turned-designer Scott Amron's Die Electric exhibit (an exhibit that seeks to persuade people to use less energy). As you can see, it's a light switch with a twist - the twist being that the standard switch component has been replaced with a coat hook.
Interestingly, if you want to hang up your jacket you need to lower the hook...but if you lower the hook, you'll turn off the light. So this creates something of a dilemma: Do you turn on the light and throw your jacket in a heap on the floor? Or do you hang up your jacket and sit in the dark?

That's different, on first glance i though you hang up your coat and turn the light ON in one motion when you come through the front door.
In Australia, down is on for a light switch... Not to mention the water spins backwards in the toilet.

Carly: Yep, that's how we originally thought it worked too! Seems a strange configuration to us :)
Over here, on / off depends on the type of switch. If it's a "press" switch, then down is on. But if it's a "flick" switch, then up is on (as in "lights up").

The 'OFF' switch will work the same no matter what your geographical loaction...Down is OFF! That was how the 'OFF' switch was designed. That is how this switch works.

Maybe the idea is to hang up your jacket during the day, so you don't turn on the lights. And then at night you are allowed to turn on the lights, but you have to put your jacket back on so you save energy because you don't need to turn on the heating ;)
