Another poor error message 20 Jul 2007

The "This is Broken" Flickr pool brings us a great example of poor error messaging from Microsoft:

A Windows dialog box message reads: 'The folder 'Folder' contains items whose name is too long for the Recycle Bin. Do you want to permanently delete it?'

Wow! There are so many problems with this, it's hard to know where to begin. Firstly, the grammar is shocking ("Items whose name is"? Surely, it should be "Items whose names are"). Secondly, the buttons don't map to the question asked of the user (What does the "Yes to all" button do? There's only one folder to delete.). Thirdly, and most importantly, the error message should never have been generated in the first place - as Good Experience points out, it's crazy that one part of the operating system (the Recycling Bin) can't handle file names created by another part of the operating system.
