Google: Search is a hard problem 22 Jun 2007
Read/WriteWeb reports on the brief presentation Udi Manber, Google's VP of Engineering, gave at Supernova yesterday, entitled "Search is a Hard Problem". Turns out that it's actually a much harder problem than even the most tech-savvy of us appreciate. Manber laid out three reasons as to why this is the case:
- Scale and diversity are almost beyond comprehension.
- Users' expectations and needs will continue to grow.
- 20 to 25% of the queries we see today, we have never seen before.
The last of these points is quite astonishing. As R/WW says "I would think with the number of queries that Google processes, they would have seen a much higher percentage of the queries before."

I bet its because a lot of peoples' search queries relate to happenings in the news. They are therefore "new" by definition.
