Taipei Metro tokens 21 May 2007

Jan Chipchase has an interesting post on the RFID-embedded Taipei Metro tokens. These "electronic travel cards" are supposed to speed up your commute, however their shape tends to confuse travellers.
As you can see, the tokens look like coins and this implicitly suggests that they need to be inserted into something in order to pass through the station barriers. However, at most stations the tokens actually need to be pressed against a flat reader surface (in the same way that an Oyster card is used at London Underground stations). Thus, chaos ensues as unfamiliar travellers search for a slot, while angry queues form behind them.

Only the Chinese could have came up with such an idea! What can I say, it's easier and it's more fun with something like this. I wonder with what they'll come up next!
