Highway wind farms 24 May 2007

A student named Joe from Arizona State University may have struck gold with his idea of highway wind turbines.

Joe proposes installing two horizontal wind turbines on the steel frames that currently hold freeway signs along the Phoenix Highway. According to his calculations, he estimates that each turbine would be able to generate 9,600kwh per year, which would be more than enough to power a few apartments, or, as he is proposing, a few community hubs along the freeway.

Sure, there are a number of technical issues to overcome (such as the shredding of low-flying birds!). But it's definitely an idea that merits further exploration.

This is one of those ideas that look good on paper. I can see rebellious teenagers throwing rocks into it or something worse. Still, has promise. See our writeup on the wind farm near Palm Springs we featured on our travel site - http://www.southpoint.com/states/ca/windmills.htm
Yes, it's going through a multi-stage site redesign, so don't hold that against us...

Who cares about the birds? Birds can adapt their behavior with time: Skinner has proven it so the birds are not an issue here. Hope this project gets on the right track to become a reality for all of us.

It is a great idea but I'm feeling sad about the poor birds, but they will get used to the catch.
