Google: The crossword puzzler's best friend 29 May 2007

Scott, a commenter over at Google Blogoscoped, noticed that several of the top 100 Google searches on 25th May were derived from clues in that day's New York Times crossword! ("In other words, more than one-eighth of Google's Hot Trends resulted from a single puzzle!")

Evidence of a blip in Google's Hot Trends algorithm? Or is the NYT really this influential? You decide...

(Note:According to Kottke, Google may now be filtering the crossword terms out of this list.)

The NYT crossword terms are still on Hot Trends. On June 3, for example, Hot Trends lists "nutritionist davis" and "hungarian spa town," among other Sunday crossword clues. (I discuss this phenomenon and other Hot Trends issues on my blog, The Cluetrends Manifestation.)
