Commerce Bank: "Most useless icons EVER" 25 May 2007

Signal vs. Noise reader Daniel Drucker points us to the "most useless icons EVER":

Commerce Bank's online banking application uses a different flower to represent each of main functions (!?)

Rose = Logoff. What could be more logical!

At least it's not mystery meat, and the button's are labeled.

You can scratch and smell the icon to have a better idea of the action.

I was thinking of starting a new account there - NO MORE!

this just goes to show that we desperately need standard web icons. I think it would be a lot easier for both designers and users if there were a single "visual metaphor" for each of these items. the rss feed icon is a really good example of this concept.

i agree these icons don't follow any visual conventions but i think they are trying to develop a reference through use. if they keep the images and labels consistent then it seems users will develop an association between the two. i'd like to see results of user testing after 6 months or so with this system.

Just to put things in perspective, that is a new feature they rolled out, where you can pick from an "icon theme" and flowers just happen to be one of them. The flowers are NOT the default icons, just for the record.

I love Commerce Bank, but I definitely wished they'd get someone good to manage their website development group.

For example, themes for overall layout would have been a lot more useful than a hodgepodge of icons. Even better would be the capability to access data that was more than say 60 days old - maybe take the money lost on implementing the icon thingie and just add disk drives to the database server so we can see more data? ;-)

I could understand if this site had something to do with flowers. But other than that, I don't see any connection.

I actually dropped Commerce because of their on-line presence. They are so far behind on so many things.

Brilliant!
My deepest sorrows for the users...
I have seen quite a lot of stupid design, but this one is far beyond expectations.
