It was a cold and frosty morning in the autumn of 1972 and David Rosenhan felt his pulse begin to race. As he pulled into the grounds of a Pennsylvanian state hospital, he glanced at the Gothic building with its caged windows and surly custodians, and his chest began to tighten. It was several minutes before he found the courage to leave his car and set off towards the entrance.
Once inside the building, Rosenhan was led to a small white room.
"What's the problem?" a psychiatrist asked.
"I'm hearing a voice," Rosenhan said.
"And what is the voice saying?" the psychiatrist replied.
"Thud," Rosenhan said.
"Thud?" The psychiatrist asked.
"Thud," said Rosenhan...
