A couple of weeks back we posted an interesting example of over-validation at Facebook. Here's another from American Express (as discovered by 37signals):

A user has entered '37signals' - i.e. 37 as a number - in an Employer Name field.

(The error message reads "Your Employer Name cannot contain any numbers").
