The Creative Prison 13 Mar 2007
UK prisons are at "bursting point". Reports suggest that there are now around 80,000 prisoners in England and Wales alone, with this number set to reach 100,000 over the next couple of years. Inmates are currently being held in police stations and court cells to ease the overcrowding; while hundreds of ready-built temporary cell units are set to be placed on existing prison sites in the near future. The government is even negotiating the purchase and re-fit of two former prison ships to hold those awaiting deportation (!)
Since John Reid came under fire in January for asking judges to jail only serious criminals, the government has been keen to explore more creative solutions to this problem. One of these solutions is the "Creative Prison" project.
The Creative Prison project is the brainchild of architect Will Alsop, artists Shona Illingworth and Jon Ford and the radical arts organisation Rideout Creative Arts for Rehabilitations. It seeks to take "a revolutionary new approach to the design of future prisons which involves the inmates themselves and challenges current social attitudes towards rehabilition". Put simply, the project examines how the design of prisons informs their effectiveness and involves a "unique collaboration" with prison staff and inmates serving life sentences at at HMP Gartree, Leicestershire.
Architecture magazine bd has an interesting write-up on the project:
"The architectural design has inmates living in blocks of twelve, each with a communal kitchen, common room and an enclosed garden. Around the perimeter of the prison is a wall that houses many of its essential elements.
"The majority of our prisions were built for an earlier idea of criminal justice in which punishment was everything. This design highlights ways that architecture can improve safety, increase social interaction and house training and education activity.
"Creative cities where people feel engaged and involved are economically and socially more successful. Why should prisons be any different? Creative Prison is a positive attempt to look at things in a different way."
