LED faucet 3 Jan 2007

The Lasercam LED faucet changes the colour of your water based upon its temperature - blue for cold, red for hot. This means that you'll never have to worry about scorching your hand while testing the water again. Here's a short clip of the system in action:

The product only exists as a prototype at the moment, so there's no word on availability or pricing just yet.

I'm really not sure about this on a tap or as any kind of warning, but I'd like it on the shower to tell me when the hot water's run through in the morning and it's ready to be climbed under.

For many purposes though, it's just telling me if it has managed to obey the request I've made of it - confusing double feedback. Better perhaps to have a tap that just always gets it right?

@Cornelius: Your shower example is a good one. (It would also be good to know if you'd run out of hot water when filling the bath).

Not so sure that the "double feedback" that the system provides is a bad thing though. Redundancy is probably a good thing in situations where you could burn yourself.

If you accidentally turned on the hot tap instead of the cold one, the red colouring would act as an extra visual cue that should immediately alert you to this fact, thereby keeping you from harm.

That is brilliant!

And it's not double feed back - it sense the water temp. I don't know about your faucets, but mine don't get hot right away.

@Bill: Good point re: the double feedback!

That is brilliant yet seems slightly pointless at the same time. I think that instead of being thought of as a boring safety feature, the colour changing could just suit your mood. Gadget freaks would love it - especially if it was voice-activated.
