Gootube gets the thumbs down 26 Jan 2007

After the big acquisition last November, the media told us that Google Video and YouTube would soon become one and the same. Seems (very) unlikely now: From Google Blog:

"Starting today, YouTube video results will appear in the Google Video search index: when you click on YouTube thumbnails, you will be taken to YouTube.com to experience the videos. Over time, Google Video will become even more comprehensive as it evolves into a service where you can search for the world's online video content, irrespective of where it may be hosted...YouTube, as we've stated previously, will remain an independent subsidiary of Google, and will continue to operate separately."

We sort of see their point, but it still seems weird.

Having looked at both Google Video and YouTube just now, I 'm not sure they're different enough to remain separate. OK so YT is just one of the many video-hosting sites that GV will eventually allow you to search across, but its also a video hosting site itself - and therein lies the confusion. IMHO Google really needs to focus on differentiating the two so as not to confuse us all.

I imagine we will soon see an end to the new "upload your videos" feature on Google video as they turn it into a pure search engine.
