IE7: Were they ready? Redux 1 Nov 2006
As you probably know, we recently reported on how the homepages of the FTSE-100 stack-up in IE7. Well a lot of debate has opened up on the interweb since, regarding the scale of the problems for those sites that are affected.
Having cast the net a little wider, we've found some serious presentation problems with the sites of a number of major UK retailers. These issues illustrate how bad things could get for the unenlightened when Microsoft swings its automated roll-out of IE7 into full-force later today. ("Internet Explorer 7 will be delivered through Automatic Updates - customers should complete preparations by November 1"). Here are our results (brace yourself)...

Lastminute.com surprises me the most. The other companies have both an online and offline presence, so - without wishing to excuse them completely - you can see how they might have taken their eye off the ball. LM however, only has its website to focus on, so I can't understand why it wasn't ready for a browser that more than 80% of its customers will soon be using!

Given lousy state of IE6 I think Microsoft couldn't avoid it. You just can't remove old bugs without affecting sites that _rely on bugs_. Even if they fixed IE7 to level of compliance Firefox/Opera have, IE7 would still have problems with some sites (as those browsers have) or even more (because it could get hacks ment for IE6).

I am surprised at your findings for Sainsbury's corporate website (www.j-sainsbury.co.uk/ ). When I upgraded from IE6 to IE7, I could no longer access this site at all, whereas previously I could.
Instead I now get this error message consistently: "This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying.".
Is there some setting that I should be aware of in IE7 that needs to be changed, or what does this error message mean and what can I do about it? I'm running Windows XP, if that helps! Thanks.
PS I have notified Sainsbury's of this, with a possible query over IE7, but they weren't interested and insisted that there was no fault at their end. What to do!
