Zune unveiled 14 Sep 2006

Breaking news: Microsoft took the wraps off its Zune media player this morning. However, as CNET puts it, "what's underneath is largely what enthusiasts had come to expect".

Toshiba, which is manufacturing the Zune device, had filed FCC documents referring to the product and its accompanying services late last month (under "Zune" and two codenames, "Argo" and "Pyxis"). A Microsoft representative later confirmed that the filing was legitimate, so today's announcement delivered little new information to those that have been following the product's development.

So what do we know? Well, Zune will come in three different colours - black, brown and white - and will be capable of sharing songs and photos with other nearby Zune devices via built-in Wi-Fi (Microsoft is really pushing the social aspects of the product). The device also includes a 30GB hard drive and 3-inch screen.

And what don't we know? Microsoft is yet to reveal any pricing information.
