Amazon's Kindle reignites e-Book reader interest 12 Sep 2006

After screenshots of it's Unbox service were leaked on a former employee's blog, Amazon will be upset to see details of it's new e-Book Reader - codenamed "Kindle" - disclosed prematurely.

Ars technica reports that one of its eagle-eyed readers stumbled across plans for Kindle while nosing around the FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology website a few days ago (Kindle, it seems, is currently undergoing FCC certification testing). You can take a look at the product spec and photographs of the prototype here. Be warned however, that the photos are pretty disappointing as the prototype currently sports all the visual panache of an old Commodore 64. We're sure it will look much slicker when it hits the stores though.

Entering the e-Book Reader market is a natural extension of Amazon's existing services, so this looks like a smart move. Especially when reports suggest that Sony and Apple want to get in on the e-Book-selling act.
