A smoother transition? 14 Aug 2006
Segway unveiled the second generation of its "self-balancing electric one-person vehicle" today. The first version of the scooter - released in 2002 - sold well considering its $5,000+ price tag, and has even been adopted by some police and security services in the United States. Unfortunately, turning the thing proved tricky, raising questions about safety and stability (Remember President Bush's fall in 2003?).
It therefore comes as no surprise that version two features a completely revamped steering system. The redesigned scooter now allows riders to steer by leaning, rather than by turning the handlebars. Klee Kleber, vice president of marketing at Segway, explains that "with the original steering ... you had to coordinate how you leaned with how much you were turning the grip...with the new version, you have it from the first time you get on it."
